It was June, and Dublin wasn’t getting any better in terms of weather. That’s when the trip to France came up.
I was elated. Temperatures were reportedly in the late 20s and I yearned for the warmth of the sun. I spent three days in a small university town called Rennes before I went to Paris. Those three days were filled with not just sunshine but also cider. Rennes is the capital of Brittany, and is part of the famed cider regions of France. Walking around the small town, and then sitting down for a lunch of crepes along with half a bottle of crisp, cold, sparkling cider served in teacups was a joy I discovered in Rennes. Yes, in teacups. The cider comes from local vineyards, which make them somewhat cheaper, and different from store bought ciders. It’s hard to stop yourself from indulging in more than a bottle or two. And the crepes. Ah, that’s another story. For now, I can still feel that teacup in my hands as I settled down with a book to take in the mild sun. Bliss.
