I have been mesmerized by the carvings in Angkor Wat and the vast complex in Borobudur. I have stood equally wonder struck at the temple architecture in Belur and Halebid. But the temple at Mahakuta, Badami, had a different quality to it.

Not only was the style different, it held on to an atmosphere of history. You felt the presence of the mighty kings who once worshipped at the temple. You could imagine members of the royal court slowly walking down into the pond, which is still in use. You could hear the chimes of the bell just as the priest brought out the vermillion and the lamp after the “puja.” Badami and Pattadakal might be more famous, but Mahakuta certainly has the charm.
